Travel costs to hospital, wigs and fabric supports

Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme

You can claim back reasonable travel costs to get to NHS treatment or tests if:

• a GP, dentist or consultant has referred you to a specialist or hospital, and
• you get income-related ESA, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, Universal Credit within the earnings limits, or have an HC2 certificate (an HC3 may cover part of the cost)

It covers the cheapest reasonable way of getting there, such as a bus fare, or mileage and parking if you drive. If you need someone with you for medical reasons, their costs may be covered too.

How to claim: ask at the hospital's cashier or patient services office. Keep your tickets and receipts. You can usually claim up to 3 months after your appointment.

Hospital parking

Many hospitals offer free parking for Blue Badge holders, and for people who visit often, such as for cancer treatment or dialysis. Ask the hospital.

Wigs and fabric supports

NHS wigs, and fabric supports such as spinal or abdominal supports, are free if you:

• are under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
• are a hospital inpatient
• get income-related ESA, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, Universal Credit within the earnings limits, or have an HC2 certificate

Otherwise, you pay an NHS charge. Charities such as the Little Princess Trust provide free real-hair wigs for children and young people who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.
