Wrist splints
Wearing a wrist splint at night keeps your wrist straight and takes pressure off the nerve. You may need to wear it for several weeks to see a difference. A pharmacist, GP or physiotherapist can advise.
Changing how you use your hands
- take regular breaks from repetitive tasks
- avoid bending your wrist for long periods
- use tools with bigger grips, and reduce vibration where you can
Steroid injections
A steroid injection into the wrist can reduce swelling and ease symptoms. The effect may wear off after some months.
Surgery
If symptoms are severe, or do not get better, you may be offered carpal tunnel release. The surgeon cuts a ligament in the wrist to make more space for the nerve.
- it is usually done under local anaesthetic as a day case
- most people have good results
- you should avoid heavy lifting for a few weeks afterwards
Do not wait too long if you have constant numbness or weakness, as the nerve can be permanently damaged.
Common questions
How long does it take to recover from carpal tunnel surgery?
Most people can use their hand for light tasks within a few days. It can take several weeks to get back to heavy tasks, and a few months for grip strength to fully return.
