Losing weight
Losing 7 to 10% of your body weight can reduce fat and inflammation in the liver, and may reverse early scarring. Lose weight gradually. Your GP may refer you to a weight management programme. Weight loss medicines or surgery may be offered to some people who qualify.
Being active
Exercise helps even if your weight does not change. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.
Treating related conditions
Controlling diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol protects your liver and your heart. Statins are safe for most people with fatty liver disease.
Alcohol
Cut down, or stop drinking, especially if you have scarring. Your doctor will advise you.
Specialist care
If you have advanced scarring, you will be seen by a liver specialist and have regular checks for liver cancer and other complications.
