Food and drink

  • eat plenty of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, beans and fish
  • cut down on sugary drinks, sweets, cakes and processed foods
  • choose healthier fats, such as olive oil and nuts
  • coffee may have a protective effect on the liver

Move more

Walking, cycling, swimming or strength exercises all help. Find something you enjoy.

Alcohol

Keep within 14 units a week spread over several days, or stop, as your doctor advises.

Avoid unnecessary medicines and supplements

Check with a pharmacist before taking herbal remedies or supplements.

Support

The British Liver Trust has a free helpline and an online liver health check.
