Skin care

  • use emollients every day, especially after washing
  • have lukewarm baths and showers, and pat skin dry
  • try not to scratch or pick at scales

Triggers

Keep a diary of flare-ups to spot triggers, such as stress, illness or skin injury.

Sunlight

Some people find sunlight helps, but avoid sunburn, which can trigger psoriasis.

Healthy living

  • stop smoking, which can make psoriasis worse
  • keep alcohol low
  • look after your heart: stay active and have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked

Your mental health

Skin conditions can affect confidence, relationships and mood. Anxiety and depression are more common in people with long-term skin conditions. Talk to your GP if you are struggling. You can refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies in England. Changing Faces supports people with a visible difference.

Support

The Psoriasis Association has information and an online community.
