Skin care

  • wash the affected areas twice a day with a mild soap or cleanser and lukewarm water
  • do not scrub, as this can make acne worse
  • use non-comedogenic (will not block pores) moisturisers, make-up and sun cream
  • take make-up off before bed

Do not pick or squeeze

Picking spots can cause infection and scarring.

Stick with treatment

Most treatments take 6 to 8 weeks to start working, and acne can seem worse at first. Keep going unless your GP says otherwise.

Your mental health

Skin conditions can affect confidence, relationships and mood. Anxiety and depression are more common in people with long-term skin conditions. Talk to your GP if you are struggling. You can refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies in England. Changing Faces supports people with a visible difference.
