Acid reflux, work and benefits

Reflux does not usually affect work or daily life enough to qualify for benefits, but some simple changes at work can help.

At work

Most people with reflux work without problems. It may help to:

  • have regular meal breaks, so you can eat smaller meals
  • avoid bending and heavy lifting straight after eating
  • avoid tight uniforms or belts

Is it a disability?

Reflux is usually mild or well controlled, so it is unlikely to count as a disability under the Equality Act. Severe complications may be different.

Benefits

Reflux on its own does not qualify for disability benefits such as PIP.

Prescriptions

Many reflux medicines can be bought cheaply from a pharmacy. If you need regular prescriptions in England, a prescription prepayment certificate can save money. Prescriptions are free in Wales.
