Living with cataracts

While you wait for surgery, small changes at home and on the road can help you stay safe and independent.

At home

  • use bright lighting, especially for reading and in the kitchen
  • use a magnifier for small print
  • reduce glare with blinds and a brimmed hat or sunglasses outdoors
  • remove trip hazards and add contrast, such as tape on step edges

Driving

You must be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres, with glasses if you need them. If your sight no longer meets this standard, you must stop driving and tell the DVLA. Glare at night can be a problem even if you meet the standard.

Eye tests

Have an eye test at least every 2 years, or more often if advised. NHS sight tests are free if you are 60 or over, or have diabetes. See help with eye care costs.

Support

RNIB has a free helpline for anyone worried about their sight.
